Silage is preserved grass. Farmers make silage in the Spring to feed their animals in the Autumn and Winter when there isn’t much grass growing in the fields and the quality is poor. There are two methods of making silage
Method 1
The grass is cut and then wrapped in plastic for storage. Silage wrap is made of low-density polyethylene, a recyclable plastic.
Method 2
Once the grass is cut with a mower, it is then the job of the forage harvester to pick up and chop the grass before blowing it into a trailer which is travelling alongside being pulled by a tractor. The trailer full of chopped grass is then transported to a silo pit where it is stored and the fermentation process takes place and silage is made. The silage is then ready for feeding to farm animals in the winter.
