The winners of the Discover Farming 2025/26 500-word competition received their awards at this year’s LEAF Open Farm Sunday event held at Coppid Hill Broadoak.
The competition was open to all young people 16 years and under who lived in the local area, 12 miles from Melplash Village Church
THE BIG QUESTION for all ENTRANTS TO ANSWER was: Why is farming still the biggest job in the world?!!
16 years & under
Winner – Alice Bacon (15 years)
11 years & under
Winner – Henry Butcher (11 years)
Runner up – Joe Cox (10 years)
8 years & under
Winner – Theo Cox (8 years)
Runner up – Pharrel Box
The winners and runner-ups were presented with their prizes by the Melplash Agricultural Society President, Peter Hardwill. The winners received a book voucher from the Bridport Book Shop for £100 and the runners-up a voucher for £50.
“We are delighted to finally reveal the winners of the 500 Words 2025/26 competition” said Discover Farming Education Co-ordinator. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported the competition this year and especially the competition sponsor Chesters Harcourt who enabled us to provide the winners and runners-up with such generous prizes. I also, of course congratulate all the finalists, it was a joy to read their entries.”
