More than 1,100 visitors attended the LEAF Open Farm Sunday held at Coppet Hill, Broadoak, Dorset. Organised by the Melplash Agricultural Society and the Marshwood Vale Cluster, a group of farmers working together across the Marshwood Vale, the event welcomed the public for a day of farming, food and learning.
Visitors had the chance to see first-hand how food is produced and how farmers care for the countryside. Tractor and trailer tours ran throughout the day, giving guests a guided look at modern farming in practice.
Sheep farming was a major focus, with live sheep shearing demonstrations attracting visitors of all ages. Guests also watched silage being made in the field as local farmers explained how grass is cut and harvested.
The event also showcased modern farming technology, including a drone demonstration showing how aerial imagery can be used to detect crop disease and support better-informed decisions.
Education was central to the day, with Discover Farming, the educational arm of the Melplash Agricultural Society, offering hands-on activities for children and families. Young visitors learned where food comes from by making butter from cream and ‘birthing’ a toy cow, helping to build a better understanding of farming and food production.
Local food producers were well represented, with a range of Dorset food and drink available throughout the day. Visitors sampled the quality and variety of local produce, including pulled Aberdeen Angus beef rolls, a Caribbean inspired chicken dish and handmade pizzas.
The event also highlighted the strong partnership between local farmers, organisations including Bredy Vets, Arla and Synergy, and the wider community. providing an opportunity for meaningful conversations about food production, environmental stewardship and the future of farming.

This year’s event showed how eager young families are to learn where their food comes from, increase their understanding of agriculture, and to see and learn directly from farmers about how they produce high-quality food while caring for the environment.”
