Towards the end of February Vicky, Simon and the family welcomed a brand new pedigree boar into the fold. As pigs are experts at escape, they have been know to lift the gate off its hinges using their snouts as a lever! Simon had to make sure all was secure for the boar’s arrival.
Max is a Middle White from a herd in West Sussex, the Mischief line and he is 6-7 months old with a bit of growing to do. Hopefully he will meet his neighbours soon. Annie and Ada in the next door pen are from the Alma Rose bloodline.
Vicky is passionate about keeping Middle White pigs and hopes to successfully breed to be part of the on-going conservation of this rare native breed.
The Middle White originated in Yorkshire when a Large White and a Small White were crossed and they were officially recognised as a breed in 1852. These pigs have a characteristic snub nose, large prick ears and a stocky build. The sows weigh around 200kg and the boars 280kg.
