The Discover Farming Careers team attended The Sir John’ Colfox’s Academy Careers Day in October. The day was considered to be a great success by all involved.
Reflecting on the day the Melplash Agricultural Society’s Vice Chairman, James Bowditch said:
“The opportunity to talk to 800 secondary school children within the Melplash Agricultural Society’s home patch has become an essential event for encouraging future generations to consider careers in farming.
“In addition to highlighting the diverse and rewarding career prospects within farming, we emphasised the critical role farmers play in providing the food that they consume daily. Many students thought that they couldn’t pursue a career in farming unless they had an existing connection to a farm; we made it very clear that they don’t have to have a farming background to enter the profession
My surprise highlight of the day was the last group from Mountjoy School; they were so interested in our stand and many came to talk to us following on from meeting us at Open Farm Sunday back in June. These relationships are being built in our community, I am especially proud of our efforts.
